Attached is a list of all Michigan Endorsement Areas with corresponding grade bands. This list may also be found on our website here.   In Michigan, candidates must select an endorsement area to pursue prior to enrolling in the program.  The endorsement area is the subject they want to certify in initially or add to their standard certificate.  Interns will take an exam associated with their endorsement area.  (See MI - Testing)

Endorsement Grade Bands Include:

Elementary (ZG) (If enrolled prior to June 1st, 2023)

Lower Elementary PK-3

Upper Elementary 3-6

Elementary K-8

Secondary 6-12

All Grades K-12

World Languages

Non-Endorsed Areas - these include Dance, Computer Science, Industrial and Technology Education, and Educational Technology and there is NO MTTC exam to take.  They require 2 years of verifiable work experience in the field they are wanting to pursue.

Elementary Notes:

Please keep in mind that interns pursing Elementary Education (ZG) must have been enrolled prior to June 1st, 2023.  Also, these candidates will not be certifying in upper or lower elementary grade bands.

If the intern wishes to switch to upper or lower elementary and is NOT on an ITC, then there is additional coursework they need to take in addition to the Upper or Lower elementary test.  We should keep the following parameters in mind.

  • We started admitting candidates to the PK-3 and 3-6 certification areas June 1, 2023, and ceased admissions in Elementary Education 103 (ZG) on May 31, 2023.

  • All candidates who are actively enrolled in our Elementary Education (ZG) not on an ITC at this time will have until 2026 to pass the Elementary Education Education 103 (ZG) and obtain an ITC.

  • All candidates actively enrolled and on an ITC at this time will have five years from the date of passing the test to complete the program for Elementary Education 103 (ZG).  So, if they pass in 2026 they have until 2031.

  • For interns certifying in the Elementary (ZG) endorsement area, they may teach self-contained classes for grades K-8 with just passing the Elementary (ZG) exam.
    1. If they were previously on an ITC for the Elementary (ZG) endorsement area and want to teach a specific subject at the middle school level they would add one of the following endorsement areas in order to be able to teach that specific subject for grades 6-8.
      1. Language Arts (BX)
      2. Mathematics (EX)
      3. Integrated Science (DI)
      4. Reading (BT)
      5. Social Studies (RX)
    2. If they are NOT on an ITC and enrolled after the Elementary (ZG) endorsement changed, and they want to teach a specific subject for any grade K-8 they would take one of the following exams.  (The exam would stand alone for the single subject area and would not be required to pair with an elementary exam.)
      1. Language Arts (BX) K-8
      2. Mathematics (EX) K-8
      3. Integrated Science (DI) K-8
      4. Reading (BT) K-8
      5. Social Studies (RX)
  • Elementary Education (ZG):  Allows interns to teach single subjects as well as self-contained for grades K-5.  For the K-8 portion of this endorsement area means interns can teach self-contained all the way up to 8th grade.  It does NOT mean they can teach single subjects to grades 6-8th.  That is where they would need to pair it with one of the above K-8 exams.
    • For Example: John Smith is teaching 6th grade self-contained (All Subjects).  John's ITC would only need to be in Elementary Ed (ZG).
