In North Carolina candidates can earn subject matter knowledge (SMK) one of two ways.

1.) Being Highly Qualified by College Credit Hours

2.) Passing a Praxis exam

This article will review the first option, being highly qualified by credit hours.

When we receive official transcripts on behalf of the intern our fulfillment analysts will review the candidate’s coursework to determine if they have 24 or more credit hours in a subject area that correlates with a certification area.

For Example:  A biology major in college will likely have 24 or more college course hours in biology allowing us to highly qualify them by hours in Biology 9-12 certification area.

Fulfillment will add their HQ by hours certification area to the SMK tab in the Advisor Portal of Prince.

Being HQ by hours in a certification area will give the intern SMK and allow them to delay the Praxis exam until they are in Phase II of the program.
