What is the edTPA?

edTPA is a performance-based, subject-specific assessment and support system used by teacher preparation programs throughout the United States to emphasize, measure and support the skills and knowledge that all teachers need from Day 1 in the classroom.

For each handbook field, the placement is a Pre-Kindergarten to 12th grade classroom. edTPA is a subject-specific assessment that includes versions for 28 teaching fields. The assessment features a common architecture focused on three tasks: Planning, Instruction, and Assessment.

Beginning September 1, 2019, all candidates seeking initial licensure in North Carolina will be required to submit qualifying scores on the appropriate edTPA performance-based, subject-specific assessment.

edTPA Process:

Once the intern has selected their content area, add the edTPA course to their training track in Prince. See edTPA Training Course

The intern must complete their edTPA module prior to submitting their portfolio through the edTPA website. Turnaround time for ToT graded portfolio courses (Example: NCNT720.EL Preparing for the Elementary Literacy edTPA) is 7-10 business days. Once a grade has posted to their intern portal, the intern will receive a voucher* to cover the edTPA fee directly from our curriculum support team.

edTPA fees are as follows:

  • $300 for full assessment or full retake
  • $300 for 3-task retake (Elementary Education: Literacy with Mathematics Task 4 and Elementary Education: Mathematics with Literacy Task 4 only)
  • $200 for 2-task retake
  • $100 for single-task retake

*If a voucher has been issued the intern must enter the voucher code when prompted on the payment page during registration; any balance must be paid by credit card. Vouchers cannot be applied retroactively to existing registrations.
