This is an update on the requirements for Elementary Education requirements and has been sent out to all Interns who enrolled with Michigan Teachers of Tomorrow before 5/31/2023.
Michigan Department of Education (MDE) will be phasing out the Elementary All Subjects K-5/Self-Contained program (ZG) endorsement program by December 2026.
They will be replacing it with Lower Elementary PK-3 (ZO) and Upper Elementary 3-6 (ZP).
Each area will have its unique certification exams. The old Elementary All Subjects K-5/Self-Contained (ZG) exam will not fulfill the requirements for the new certifications.
This means that to become certified in the Elementary All Subjects K-5/Self-Contained program (ZG) endorsement area, you must:
- Take and pass the Elementary All Subjects K-5/Self-Contained program (ZG) exam by 6/30/2026
- Obtain valid employment by 12/31/2026
- Complete all necessary requirements to apply for your Interim Teaching Certificate (ITC) in Elementary All Subjects K-5/Self-Contained program (ZG) by 12/31/2026*
If you do not meet these requirements, you will be required to pursue a new ITC in a separate endorsement area of your choice.
*Please Note: Interim Teaching Certificates are valid for 5 years. If you are not on your standard certificate by June 30th of the 5th year of your ITC, we will not be able to recommend you for your standard certificate in Elementary All Subjects K-5/Self-Contained program.
+ Please note: You are not required to take the Elementary All Subjects K-5/Self-Contained program (ZG) if you do not wish to. It is at your discretion if you would like to pursue the new Lower Elementary PK-3 (ZO) and Upper Elementary 3-6 (ZP) certification areas. In addition, if you would like to switch from Elementary All Subjects K-5/Self-Contained program (ZG) to either the Lower Elementary PK-3 (ZO) or Upper Elementary 3-6 (ZP) you will not be able to change back if you subsequently change your mind.
Please contact your Program Advisor if you have any questions regarding the phase-out of this endorsement area or its impact on your certification goals.
