North Carolina interns are required to complete 12 hours of field-based experience as part of their Phase II requirements.

Requirements:

  • All 12 hours must be in person
  • All 12 hours must take place in a variety of classrooms, grades, and subjects or schools
  • At least one experience (1 hour) must be completed at a low-performing school

Submission Requirements:

  • Each day must be submitted separately
  • no more than 6 hours completed in a day
  • Intern needs to highlight their active engagement in the classroom (participation)
  • Connect their reflection to specific coursework
  • Each reflection must be unique (no copy and paste from another reflection)
  • Official school email must be used for verification purposes

NC interns have access to a field-based experience letter located in their intern portal under Menu> Field Based Experiences. They may use this letter to approach a school or district to arrange a time in advance to complete their experiences.  The letter also outlines the requirements needed for it to count.

To submit field-based experience interns will click on Menu> Field Based Experience> Add Field-Based Experience

When completing the form they must indicate if their experience occurred at a low-performing school

Starting 01.03.24, Bevin Roue from our curriculum department will be reaching out to interns who have previously completed 12 hours of field-based experience in person but did not complete any of their 12 hours at a low-performing school.  He will be requesting they complete at least one hour of field-based experience at a low-performing school and submit for credit to get their FBE's in compliance.

Additionally, Bevin will be reaching out to interns who only completed online field-based experience to also request they get their field experiences in compliance with the above requirements.

Attached to this article is an example of the email going out to these groups of interns who have out-of-compliance field-based experiences.  No current field-based experience will be denied, rather we will be asking the interns to submit additional field-based experience to bring them into compliance with current requirements.

Additionally, an alert notification in the intern's portal will be posted.

Field-Based Experiences

We have updated your intern portal with important information about new procedures for completing Field-Based Experiences. As per state guideline, you must complete 12 hours of in-person FBEs including one at a low-performing school. Going forward we have eliminated all online FBEs. If you have previously completed all 30 hours FBEs online, please check your email for further instructions.
