The following three exams are being retired in the next year and will be replaced with new exams for the same subject area.  

PAID Candidates NOT on a certificate:

 Has NOT PASSED the exam

• If an intern is in paid status and is approved for one of the old exams (231,158,157) They would need to pass it, get hired, and be issued their intern certificate by 09/01/2024 in order to avoid retesting.  
• If an intern is in paid status and not hired on an intern certificate by 09/01/2024 they should take the new exam (331,258,257) to become eligible for an SOE and an intern certificate.  

 Has PASSED exam 

• If an intern is in paid status, not hired and has already passed one of the old exams (231,158,157), they have until 09/01/2025 to get on their intern/probationary certificate.  
  • If issued an intern or probationary certificate on or before 09/01/2025, they MUST retest, and take the new exam (331,258,257) because we will no longer be able to issue standard certificates for the old exams at this point. 
• An intern in Paid status with a passed 231,158,157 exam is eligible for hire to teach on an intern or probationary certificate until 09/01/2025

HIRED Candidates:  

On an Active Certificate- 

• If an intern is on an active intern/probationary certificate for an old exam (231,158,157), they need to complete all requirements eligible for a standard certificate by 09/01/2025 to avoid retesting.  
• If the intern's certificate expiration date is AFTER 09/01/2025 they will be required to retest and take one of the new exams. (331,258,257)
  • For Example: Intern passes the 231 on 08/31/2024 and is hired to teach on their intern certificate on 09/15/2024 they will be required to retest and take the new 331 to qualify for their standard certificate by 09/15/2025.   
• If an intern is on an active intern certificate for an old exam (231,158,157), and needs to go on a Principal Extension, they must do so prior to 09/01/2024 to avoid retesting.  This is because a principal extension is for a full year and the intern will be required to teach for a full year on their principal extension.  All requirements for a standard certificate in the old exam area must be completed with the certificate recommended on or before 09/01/2025.  

 Not on an Active Certificate but in HIRED Status: 

• If an intern is not on any active certificate and has passed an old exam (231,157,158) they MUST complete all requirements for the old exam to qualify for a standard by 09/01/2025.  This includes teaching on a requirements incomplete extension if needed to meet time taught.  As long as their extension time does not go past 09/01/2025 and all requirements are met by 09/01/2025 or sooner we can issue a standard in the old exam areas.

Talking Points: 

"The new 331 English 7-12 exam is being offered as early as September 2nd, 2024.  If your goal is to get hired for the 24-25 school year by August of 2024 you will want to focus on passing the current 231 English Language Arts and Reading 7-12 exam.  You will need to pass the current 231 ELAR 7-12 exam, get hired, and be issued your intern certificate by September 1st, 2024 to avoid retesting and taking the new 331 English Language Arts and Reading 7-12 exam."  

"If you pass the current 231 English Language Arts and Reading 7-12 exam but are not hired to teach on an intern certificate, meaning your certificate is NOT issued and active by September 1st, 2024, you will still be eligible for an intern certificate before September 1st, 2025.  However, upon hire to teach on an intern certificate AFTER September 1st, 2024, you will be required to retest during your intern year of teaching and take the NEW 331 English Language Arts and Reading exam to qualify for a standard certificate."
