During an intern or probationary year of teaching, our interns may go on maternity leave or other approved leave of absence from their school districts.

What is considered Approve Leave?

19 TAC 228.35(e)(2)(B)   (i) An EPP may permit an internship of up to 30 school days fewer than the minimum if due to maternity leave, military leave, illness, bereavement, or if the late hire date is after the first day of the school year.

  • Please note: Approved military leave includes military spouses.

Procedure and Financials:

Approved leave of absences require the intern to notify Texas Teachers prior to leave so that our Certification Support team can put the intern's account on hold, preventing monthly program fee payments from taking place while on leave and stopping field supervisor visits.

  • Please note: holds go into effect the following month after intern goes on leave

Once the intern has notified an advisor via email or phone, the advisor should complete the following:

  • Notate the account that the intern plans to go on leave
  • Collect the estimated dates of leave from the intern if available
  • Email Certification Support with the intern's name, intern ID, indicate they are going on leave with any relvant information in regards to the leave.

Once the intern has returned from leave, it is important they notify us immediately once they are back in the classroom so we can reinstate payments and resume field supervisor visits. This is highly important.

We require the intern's HR department to provide first and last dates of leave to determine time taught.  This documentation is required before the intern receives their standard certificate. It can be emailed to teach@texasteachers.org.  Upon receiving the dates of leave from the intern's HR department, the advisor should forward to our Certification Support team.

Interns can be on an approved leave of absence for up  to 30 school days without it affecting their time taught for their intern year of teaching.

Should additional time taught be needed, Certification Support will make a high priority note in the account to make advisors aware of the requirement for an extension.
