Interns are required to complete Supplemental Coursework as part of their Phase II requirements to be eligible for their standard certificate.

Supplemental Courses are required to earn a standard certificate.  If the intern has not completed their supplemental courses before their intern certificate expires, they have 2 options.

  1. They may take neccessary steps to go on a requirements incomplete extension to allow them more time to complete their courses (or any other remaining requirements they may have.) It is best to advise the intern to  first check with their school district to determine if an active certificate is required for them to maintain employment.
  2. If an active certificate is not required for them to maintain employment, the intern is allowed to complete their supplemental courses with an expired certificate.  Once they have completed all program requirements we can move forward with recommendation of their standard.  This circumstance will cause them to have a gap of time where they are uncertified between their intern cert expiring and them completing their supplemental courses and TOT recommending their standard.

Supplemental Coursework correlates with the intern's certification area issued on their certificate.

For Example: If the intern is issued an intern certificate for Core Subjects EC-6 w/STR they will complete Supplemental coursework for that specific certification area.

In some circumstances an intern will pass multiple content exams for different certification areas.  The Intern is only required to complete supplemental courses and methods courses in the area they teach on an intern certificate for.  Methods courses will populate for every passed exam.  Therefore, once an intern is on an intern certificate for one specific area, the advisor can email lead@texasteachers.org to have the methods courses not associated with their certification area removed.

For Example:  Intern passed 236 Science 7-12 and 235 Math 7-12.  Intern only gets hired to teach on an intern certificate for Math 7-12.  Therefore the intern is only required to complete the methods course for Math 7-12.  The Advisor can email lead@texasteachers.org to have the methods course for secondary science removed.

Clarity: The only courses that can be requested for removal are methods courses that do not correlate with the certification area on the intern's certificate.  All other supplemental courses would be required for a standard.
